MATZEVAH: UNVEILING OF A STONE MARKER

A headstone or footstone is known as a Monument, (Matzevah).  There are varying customs as to when it should be placed at the grave.  Most families arrange for an unveiling ceremony sometime after the burial.  It is customary to unveil the stone any time after the first thirty days of mourning (Sheloshim).  There is no restriction regarding the timing, other than the unveiling cannot be held during certain periods of the year, such as (Passover or Chol HaMoed).

Many families wait eleven months to unveil a stone so they can gather just before the first-year anniversary (Yahrzeit).  You will find a cloth or shroud covering, that has been placed on the stone, to be removed by close family members.  Unveiling ceremonies often include the reading of Psalms, Mourners Kaddish, and the prayer El Moley Rachamim.  The service may also include family members and clergy offering words of remembrance in honor of the deceased.
